The Muslim Brotherhood specter cancels a pro-Palestinian conference in France

French authorities have canceled an event that was scheduled to take place from Thursday to Friday next week, due to controversy surrounding one of its organizers.

The cancellation stems from the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies in Paris (CAREP), which is seen as affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood.

According to the French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche, after several days of heated debate, the Collège de France decided to cancel a conference on Palestine that was set to take place next Thursday and Friday, “in response to the controversy surrounding the organization of the event,” as the institution announced.

The director of the Collège de France stated: “As the person responsible for the institution, for the safety of individuals and property, and for ensuring the proper conduct of events, I was obliged to cancel the conference.”

The institution emphasized that it “does not invite, promote, or support any form of activism,” reaffirming its “complete neutrality regarding issues of political or ideological nature.”

On the social media platform X, French Minister of Higher Education Philippe Baptiste welcomed the decision, describing it as “responsible.” He said: “Defending academic freedom means defending open, respectful, and pluralistic debate. That is the message I conveyed to the director of the Collège de France in recent days.”

The conference, titled “Palestine and Europe: The Weight of the Past and Contemporary Dynamics,” was organized by historian Henry Laurens in cooperation with the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies in Paris (CAREP). Several figures described it as a “pro-Palestinian” event.

The gathering was set to include several researchers from CAREP, including its Paris director, Salam Kawakibi.

This research institute, funded from abroad, has been described by various academic sources cited by Le Figaro as “the intellectual spearhead of the Muslim Brotherhood.”

The closing session was expected to feature Josep Borrell, former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and ex–Vice President of the European Commission, Dominique de Villepin, former French Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, and Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories.
