Kais Saied stresses accountability for the Muslim Brotherhood and protection of Tunisia’s wealth

Tunisian President Kais Saied emphasized the need to safeguard the country’s wealth and hold accountable all those who have harmed state institutions, in a reference to the Muslim Brotherhood.

His remarks were made on Wednesday during a visit to the Meat Company in the El Ouardia district of the capital, Tunis, according to a video released by the Tunisian presidency.

The president stated that he “will not allow the people to be easy prey for anyone,” adding that “the law is the ultimate arbiter under which all are equal.”

He affirmed that the state would continue its social path until the demands of all Tunisians are met across all sectors.

In an implicit reference to the Muslim Brotherhood, Saied stressed the need to hold accountable everyone involved in harming public institutions, noting that “there are those who consider themselves part of the opposition, yet they are criminals.”

He pointed out that “all crimes and suspicious deals have been documented since the 1990s, and after 2010” — the period following the revolution during which the Ennahdha movement, affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, held power until 2021 — assigning responsibility to all parties for the company’s current situation.

Commenting on rising red meat prices, Saied said: “The citizen has the right to eat meat at the prices set by the Tunisian state.”

Tunisian authorities have set the price of lamb at 40 dinars (14 dollars) per kilogram, after it had reached 65 dinars (22.7 dollars), and beef at around 32 dinars (11.2 dollars) per kilogram, after exceeding 45 dinars (approximately 15 dollars).
