Belgium Cruise Past the United States to Reach the World Cup Quarter-finals
American forward Folarin Balogun delivered a disappointing performance despite the controversy surrounding the suspension of his one-match ban following the red card he received against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Belgium secured an emphatic 4–1 victory over the United States on Tuesday to book their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, in a match overshadowed by FIFA’s controversial decision to suspend the one-match suspension imposed on American striker Folarin Balogun.
Charles De Ketelaere gave Belgium the lead in the ninth minute with a simple finish, capitalizing on the United States’ nervous start and quickly silencing the home supporters.
United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino said: “From the very beginning, we never settled into the game. Even after we equalized at 1-1, we conceded again with the very next attack.”
Malik Tillman equalized in the 31st minute with a deflected free kick that wrong-footed goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. However, just over a minute later, De Ketelaere restored Belgium’s lead with a header at the far post.
The United States looked more confident after halftime until goalkeeper Matt Freese committed a costly mistake, allowing substitute Hans Vanaken to score Belgium’s third goal in the 57th minute, a decisive moment that permanently shifted the momentum at Seattle Stadium, leaving the home crowd stunned.
Romelu Lukaku added a fourth goal in stoppage time, prompting American supporters to head for the exits before the final whistle and sending Belgium into the quarter-finals for the third time in the last four editions of the FIFA World Cup. Belgium will face reigning European champions Spain in Los Angeles next Friday.
The defeat means that all three host nations have now been eliminated from the tournament, following Canada’s and Mexico’s Round of 16 exits.
The build-up to the match was dominated by the unprecedented intervention of U.S. President Donald Trump before FIFA suspended Balogun’s one-match ban following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, the 25-year-old striker struggled to make any meaningful impact and produced an underwhelming performance.
