Saudi Arabia Bids Farewell to the World Cup After a Goalless Draw with Cape Verde

The Green Falcons failed to record a single victory during the group stage, finishing fourth with two points.

Saudi Arabia’s national football team was eliminated from the FIFA World Cup in the first round after being held to a 0-0 draw by Cape Verde on Friday evening in the third and final Group H match. The result brought an end to the team’s campaign in the tournament currently being hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Meanwhile, Cape Verde secured qualification for the Round of 32 in its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance. The valuable point earned from the draw raised the team’s tally to three points, allowing it to continue its remarkable historic journey.

The match was evenly contested for much of the game, with both sides sharing possession and creating several scoring opportunities. However, a lack of precision in the final third prevented either team from finding the back of the net, and the encounter ended in a goalless draw.

As a result, Cape Verde finished second in the group and will face reigning world champions Argentina, winners of Group J, in a highly anticipated Round of 32 match scheduled to take place in Miami on July 3.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, finished bottom of the group in fourth place with just two points and exited the tournament without registering a single victory during the group stage. The Green Falcons opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Uruguay before suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to Spain and concluding with a scoreless draw against Cape Verde.

The Green Falcons therefore failed to achieve their ambition of reaching the knockout rounds for only the second time in their history and for the first time since their memorable appearance at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. Their campaign ended at the group stage.

Cape Verde, on the other hand, continued its impressive performances by remaining unbeaten throughout the group stage. The team opened with a goalless draw against Spain, followed by an entertaining 2-2 draw with Uruguay, before securing the crucial point against Saudi Arabia that guaranteed its historic qualification.

The match began cautiously, with both teams showing restraint despite enjoying periods of possession. Saudi Arabia produced the first notable opportunity in the 17th minute when Salem Al-Dawsari attempted a shot, but the Cape Verdean defense successfully blocked the effort.

Cape Verde responded in the 22nd minute through Willy Semedo, whose attempt was comfortably saved by Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais. Shortly afterward, defender Hassan Tambakti was forced off through injury in the 31st minute and was replaced by Ali Lajami.

As halftime approached, Cape Verde increased its attacking pressure and threatened the Saudi goal on several occasions. Nevertheless, the clearest opportunity of the opening half fell to Saudi Arabia during stoppage time when Mohammed Kanno headed Abdulelah Al-Amri’s cross, but his effort lacked sufficient power and was comfortably collected by goalkeeper Vozinha.

In the second half, Cape Verde maintained its attacking momentum, forcing Mohammed Al-Owais into several important saves, most notably in the 75th minute when he denied Laros Duarte in a one-on-one situation to keep Saudi Arabia’s hopes alive.

Saudi Arabia attempted to respond through quick counterattacks, with its most promising chance coming in the 65th minute through Mohammed Aboulchamat, although the effort failed to seriously trouble the Cape Verdean goalkeeper.

The closing stages produced considerable excitement as both teams pushed forward in search of a winning goal. However, resolute defending and outstanding performances from both goalkeepers ensured that the score remained unchanged. The match ultimately ended in a 0-0 draw, a result that secured Cape Verde a historic qualification while bringing Saudi Arabia’s World Cup campaign to a definitive close.
