Private sources confirmed to “the Libyan Sada newspaper” that the prison order was issued for cases of financial and administrative corruption committed by al-Sallabi outside Libya.
Libya’s Muslim Brotherhood is pressing hard to stop the investigation of al-Sallabi, who is accused of seizing money and property in Uganda belonging to the Libyan-owned Islamic Daawa Association.
Two days ago, President of the Libyan Muslim Brotherhood Council of State Khaled al-Michri and Attorney General Sadeq al-Sour discussed the issue and speculation revolved around his request to “close this file”.
Last Monday, Al-Sour ordered the detention of al-Sallabi and another, on « charges of damage to public money and the » public interest, as preliminary investigations revealed « they had failed to provide the public interest, engaged in behavior that led to a significant waste of funds intended for their » purpose.
The investigation began months ago when the steering committee sent documents to the prosecutor’s office proving that al-Sallabi was involved in the case, the sources said.
The committee said: The property seized included “the Society’s branch office, Block No. 27, John Babha Avenue, Kololo (Kampala), as well as the land and real estate of Block No. 99, Kira Rood (Kampala), along with land belonging to Block No. 99, Bukoto Astrit (Kampala) and land in Masaka District, Block No. 266″.
It also included other assets, land, real estate and deposits of about $6 million and $400,000 in the Estonian Bank owned by the Libyan Foreign Bank, which has been subject to freeze since 2011.
