Tunisian President Kais Saied decided on July 25 to freeze the work of the parliament and to dissolve the government of Hichem Mechichi. Despite the formation of a new government, the fate of the parliament remains unclear.
Meanwhile, the head of the Free Constitutional Party, MP Abir Moussi, demanded the dissolution of parliament immediately and the holding of premature legislative elections, stressing that “there is no disagreement between her and Tunisian President Kais Saied, and her opposition to the order issued on September 22 last was only to try to understand it and clarify the road map”, according to MENA Observatory.
Moussi had criticized President Kais Saied, asserting that her party is innocent of the current 2021 finance law and did not vote on it when it was presented in the Tunisian parliament.
Tunisian MP Kais Saied held the president responsible for passing the law, explaining that “the debt today is 100,000 billion, and the government is committed to implementing previous agreements in exchange for the lack of financial resources and funds”.
After announcing the exceptional measures and suspending most articles of the constitution, the Tunisian president pledged to reform the political system and the electoral law but did not specify a clear roadmap for reforms or whether he would launch a national dialog with parties and organizations.
