A study reveals the risks of using cannabis before exercise

An American study published in the “Sports Medicine” journal found that using cannabis before exercise can enhance positive mood and enjoyment during physical activity. However, on the other hand, the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in it may make the exercise more challenging and strenuous.

In contrast to common stereotypes linking cannabis use to stable behavior, researchers noted that its use increases enjoyment and euphoria during sports. Nevertheless, the tetrahydrocannabinol in it is associated with an increased perception of exercise difficulty, perhaps due to its impact on heart rate. Therefore, despite the heightened enjoyment, cannabis did not enhance running performance.

The research conducted by researchers from the University of Colorado delves into the underlying mechanisms of “runner’s high,” suggesting that cannabis can induce similar sensations during exercise by binding to receptors in the brain, similar to natural cannabinoids in the body.

The study emphasizes that while cannabis may offer mood-enhancing effects during exercise, it comes with risks such as dizziness and loss of balance, and may not be suitable for everyone, especially those aiming for peak performance in competitive events.
