Al-Kadhimi: Iraq’s accelerating events signal concern

The Iraqi Prime Minister warned that the accelerated events in the country in light of the current political differences represent a worrying indication of stability and social peace.

Mustafa Al-Kadhimi expressed his government’s surprise that attempts to thrust it into the details of political crises continued even after it entered the business phase.

He said: “Everyone must preserve what has been achieved and support the government, its institutions, and the security and military forces to carry out their duties in ensuring stability”.

He appealed to all political forces not to drop the crisis on the Iraqi government.

On Wednesday, hundreds of supporters of the Sadrist movement stormed the headquarters of the parliament in Baghdad, rejecting al-Sudani’s candidacy for the presidency of the government. The country’s most popular Sadrist movement, however, is not the only rejecter of the Sudanese. The Tishreen Coalition, which represents the 2019 protests, also refuses to nominate him.

On Thursday, Ibrahim Al-Jabri, the director of Al-Sadr’s office in Baghdad, warned of the possibility of a return to demonstrations next Saturday, coinciding with a social media mobilization.

Nine months after the October 2012 parliamentary elections, which were designed to sow popular anger following unprecedented demonstrations, Iraq has yet to emerge from its political crisis.
