Analyst: There is a genuine desire for Syria to return to the Arab fold

Jordan hosted on Monday a meeting of the foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq with the Syrian Foreign Minister to build on Arab contacts with the Syrian government in the context of its proposals, and the Jordanian initiative to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

Serious steps

Ambassador Sinan Al Majali, spokesman for the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, said that the meeting was a continuation of the consultative meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq in Jeddah in mid-April.

The Amman meeting comes ahead of an Arab summit in Riyadh on 19 May, while Syria’s membership in the Arab League has been on hold since 2011.

Arab desire

Journalist and expert on Arab affairs Gamal Al-Keshky says that there are wide-ranging Arab efforts to bring Syria back to the Arab League, pointing out that there is a real Arab desire for Syria to return to the Arab embrace.

He added that hosting an Arab consultative meeting on Syria in Amman confirms that there is an intention to restore order to the Arab League, it must hold an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Arab League, at the request of a country and with the support of an additional country.

He continued, “The demand for Syria’s return to the Arab League is then raised, and then the discussion begins. Some countries will say yes and countries that will reject, and at the end of the meeting, the presidency, which is currently for the State of Egypt, will either resort to a vote where the majority will prevail over the minority or will resort to the broad consensus that we adopt in the Arab League, knowing that the Arab League always avoids voting despite its presence in the charter and always tries to reach a consensus.”
