Deaths and power outages in Australia due to storms

Australian authorities announced on Monday that a woman has died and more than 120,000 people have been left without power after strong winds and heavy rain swept through the southern part of the country.

Widespread damage occurred in the states of Victoria and Tasmania, while a 63-year-old woman died after a tree fell on a cabin at a resort on the border between Victoria and New South Wales, according to emergency services.

Victoria’s Premier, Jacinta Allan, said in a press conference that the state’s emergency services had received over 2,800 calls overnight, mostly related to fallen trees and damage to buildings.

Allan also mentioned that power is still out for at least 121,000 people today, down from 180,000 people earlier in the morning.

Weather warnings remain in effect across much of the state’s southeastern coast, where winds reaching around 150 kilometers per hour battered the region throughout the night.

The southern island state of Tasmania also experienced cold weather, causing power outages for thousands of people on Sunday.

Extreme weather events are common for many Australians.

These storms in the south of the country come just days after unusually high temperatures for this time of year, reaching around 30 degrees Celsius in Sydney, the capital of New South Wales.
