Lebanon – Hezbollah’s disappearance and ongoing crisis

The successive incidents that have taken place in Lebanon over the past few hours, in which a series of intrusions by angry depositors of banks in Lebanon, driven by frustration from the worsening financial collapse without any solutions looming on the horizon, have once again raised fears because of the fragile security situation in Lebanon, which for more than two years has been suffering the worst economic crisis in its history, which led to a record collapse in the value of the local currency, the lira against the dollar. In addition, Lebanon has entered into many crises, foremost among which is the increase of Hezbollah’s influence and the tensions and threats it poses to the region as a whole.

Bank closures

The conflict of political power in Lebanon has exacerbated the economic crises, and pushed Lebanon into a dark tunnel due to the government situation, the election of a president of the republic, the demarcation of the maritime border with the Israeli entity, in addition to the internal accounts of all political leaders in the country, and the strategic conflict in the Middle East. After the Lebanese crisis loomed in the horizon, the Lebanese Banking Association decided to close all banks in the country for three days starting next Monday, against the background of security concerns in the face of increasing attacks by depositors seeking to recover their savings, which were impounded in a country torn by an unprecedented economic and political crisis.

Filling the constitutional void

Dr. Mohammed al-Riz, a Lebanese political analyst, said the political and economic conditions in Lebanon are very difficult, especially with the increase in bank incursions by depositors to reclaim their money, in addition to the monopoly of fuel by some Lebanese traders who control the internal situation in Lebanon.

The Lebanese political analyst added that there are many scenarios that will lead Lebanon to enter into a major worsening of the crisis, which is that the failure to form a new government, the occurrence of a presidential vacuum, Lebanon falling into a state of disintegration, and the arrival of the exchange rate of the dollar to 50 thousand lira; He added that what is required at that time is to work to fill the constitutional void by consensus, electing a president to accompany the new phase and forming a government capable of resolving the economic problems and crises that currently strike Lebanon. The Lebanese political analyst also criticized the disappearance of Hezbollah at a time of crises that hit the country, and only shows itself in its own interests, pointing out that all of its actions have plunged Lebanon into major crises throughout the past period, especially causing tension in its relations with various countries in the region.
