Sustainable development and support for the green economy… How does Cop28 in the UAE support them?

The UAE has begun to prepare in earnest for the COP28 Climate Conference, scheduled for November, in terms of finding solutions and alternatives, relying on renewable energy and offering opportunities for sustainable economic development in the face of climate change.

The UAE hosted 28 contributions towards global consensus to solve the climate crisis and its impact on the world. The UAE worked to form a Supreme National Committee to oversee the hosting of the COP28. The committee is headed by Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Green economy

Under the patronage of UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the World Organization for Green Economy (WEMO) organized the 8th edition of the World Green Economy Summit on 28 and 29 September 2022 in conjunction with the Water, Energy and Environment Technology (WETEX) and Dubai Solar Energy Expo.

Each year, the Summit attracts a number of local and international dignitaries, including heads of state and government, as well as a large number of international speakers, officials, representatives of government institutions, media representatives, experts and academics.

The World Summit discusses a number of key themes, such as energy, finance, food security, youth and other topics that contribute to advancing the transition towards a green economy and accelerating sustainable development.

In addition to its pioneering role in promoting interest in the green economy, the summit plays an essential role in supporting the UAE’s outstanding climate action efforts, its firm commitment to sustainability, its support for energy and climate change issues, and the development of sustainable solutions to environmental challenges, which supports the UAE’s preparations to host the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Expo, Dubai, in November 2023. This is the most important and largest international climate action conference with the participation of world leaders and leaders, confirming the UAE’s leadership and the world’s appreciation for its efforts in climate action.

Participation in international events highlights UAE’s strategies

The UAE is participating extensively in the COP28 events, both at the level of heads of state and leaders of climate, environmental and youth action, which reflects international confidence in the UAE’s ability to lead global efforts in the area of sustainability and climate change.

The 15th session of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week witnessed many important events that clearly confirmed the global nature of this event, including the 13th session of the General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency, which is considered the highest decision-making authority of the agency. More than 90 ministers and more than 1,800 international personalities participated, including leaders, government officials, representatives of organizations and international and private entities.

Discussions at the meeting underscored the need to double investments in renewable energy, and that success in climate protection depends on the transition to clean energy.
