Tax fraud charges: Shakira faces more than 8 years in prison
Trouble continues for Shakira. Barcelona’s public prosecutor announced Friday that he will seek more than eight years in prison for tax evasion against Colombian star Shakira, who refuses to make any deal and says he is ready to go to trial.
In its indictment, which the AFP has been able to consult, the public prosecutor states that it will demand nearly 24 million euros in fines from the singer, accused of having taken 14.5 million euros from the Spanish tax authorities between 2012 and 2014.
The court must now decide whether and when to hold a trial.
Shakira, who claims her innocence, said on Wednesday that she would refuse to seal a deal with prosecutors, saying she would prefer a trial to plea-guilty proceedings.
According to her lawyers, however, the possibility of reaching an agreement remains open until the opening of the hearing in a Barcelona court, while the 45-year-old star’s formal dismissal has not yet been pronounced.
