The confrontation between the supporters of Trump and protesters in Portland
The police reported that one person was shot and killed late Saturday in Portland, Oregon, while a huge convoy of the supporters of President Donald Trump and Black Lives Matter protesters confronted in the streets.
However, It wasn’t clear if the shooting was associated with fights that happened when a caravan of about 600 vehicles was clashed by protesters in the Center of the city, while a freelancer with an Associated Press observed that police medics working on the body of the victim, who appeared to be a white man.
The Portland Police Bureau declared in a statement: Portland Police officers heard sounds of gunfire from the area of Southeast 3rd Avenue and Southwest Alder Street. They responded and located a victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. Medical responded and determined that the victim was deceased.
It should be noted that Portland, since the killing of George Floyd by the police in Minneapolis, has been the site of nightly manifests for more than three months. It was the arrest of the Hundreds by local and federal law enforcement and, ahead of the shooting, police arrested many people on Saturday and advises citizens to avoid the center of the city.
After two days that Trump invoked Portland as a liberal city ravaged with violence in a speech at the Republican National Convention as part of his law and order re-election campaign theme, the chaotic scene took place, while it’s the third Saturday that the supporters of Trump have reassembled in the city.
The caravan of the supporters of Trump had rallied at a nearby mall and move as a group to the center of Portland, and when they arrived in the city, protesters tried to prevent them by standing in the street and blocking bridges. Furthermore, videos from the scene revealed sporadic fighting and the supporters of Trump firing paintball pellets at the opposite and using bear spray while the opposite-protesters threw things at the Trump caravan.
Portland Police reported on Twitter: There have been some instances of violence between demonstrators and counterdemonstrators and added: Officers have intervened and in some cases made arrests.
Usually, the Black Lives Matter demonstrations target police buildings and federal buildings, as certain protesters have appealed for the decrease in police budgets while the mayor of the city and some in the Black community have denounced the violence, saying that it’s counterproductive.
Otherwise, early Saturday morning, fires outside a police union building that is a frequent site for protests urged police to declare a riot. The police declared in a statement that an accelerant was used to ignite a mattress and other debris that was laid against the door of the Portland Police Association building, whereas one dumpster had also been set on fire in the close street. The disturbance came after a sit-in on Friday night in the lobby of the Portland mayor’s condominium building.
