Tunisia: New Arrests in the Ranks of the Ennahdha Movement of the Muslim Brotherhood – Details

As supporters of Tunisian President Kais Saied gathered in the capital to demand “the completion of the process of holding to account those who have committed crimes against the country,” the public prosecution issued warrants on Monday against leading members of the Ennahdha Brotherhood and political figures over what is known as the “conspiracy against state security” case.

According to Radio Mosaique, the public prosecutor’s office authorized the prosecution of 12 people, most of whom are leading figures of Ennahdha, following extensive investigations into state security conspiracy and attempted coup d’état.

These developments come days after the arrest of Abdul fattah Al-Tagouty, head of the media office of Ennahdha leader Rached Ghannouchi.

Mosaique said that the number of people detained in connection with the case concerning which arrest warrants were issued rose to eight, among them Abdel Fattah Al-Tagouty and the Regional Secretary General of the Ennahdha Movement in Beja, in addition to other members of the Bureau, a woman, a secondary education union, a merchant and a blogger, and others.

More recently, the security forces have arrested more than 20 politicians, businessmen, and media figures for investigation in the case of conspiring against state security, and Ennahdha leaders are facing other investigations such as the Instalingo media company’s case and the jihadists’ travel to hotbeds of tension during their rule.

Tunisian authorities arrested Ahmed Lamari, a former Ennahdha leader, and earlier the judiciary issued warrants of imprisonment against controversial businessman Kamel Eltaief, political activist Khayam Turki, and former Ennahdha leader Abdelhamid Jelassi for conspiracy against state security.

It also issued arrest warrants for Ennahdha politicians Ali Larayedh and Noureddine Bhiri, and arrested Ennahdha leader Sayed Ferjani, who is accused in the Instalingo case and of creating a parallel security apparatus. The authorities arrested leaders of the Salvation Front on charges of conspiring against state security and overthrow of the government.
