Turks back opposition in call for early elections

A recent poll revealed that a majority of Turkish voters support the opposition’s call for early elections due to the current situation in the country.

The poll was conducted by the Orc Research Foundation (ORC), which is known to be close to the regime, on the preferences of Turkish voters, according to the website of the opposition newspaper Sozcu.

The survey asked respondents whether they believe Turkey needs early elections before its official date in June 2023.

According to the results, 59.9% of the respondents indicated that early elections should be held in Turkey, while 40% expressed their rejection of the idea.

In a related to the results of the poll, the institution clarified that “Despite the high percentage of those who believe that the country needs early elections, the percentage of those who see the current government as a failure exceeds this percentage. The percentage of dissenting voters rises among those who oppose holding early elections.”

“Voters opposed to the early elections attributed their opposition to their fear that the already-deteriorating economy will decline even further, and nearly 40% of voters supporting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the previous presidential election made it clear that the country needs early elections,” she said.

“The economy, the judiciary and the refugee problem are the main causes of this situation. “It seems that the continuation of economic problems after the end of the total closure, despite the government’s statements during the closure period that the crisis is happening everywhere around the world, and that things will return to how they were after the closure broke the Justice and Development Party bloc.”

“The authorities denial of the Afghan refugee wave also shattered the confidence of the same bloc of voters. The impression that the law and democracy are in decline has weakened the idea that justice and development can be increased to the percentage of his electorate once again more than just shattering it.”

“Talking about the inability to recover is more dangerous for Justice and Development than anything else,” said. “This situation will reinforce the trend towards the parties that are dissident from Justice and Development. “If the decline continues during July and August, we can say that maintaining the Justice and Development as the country’s first political party will be extremely dangerous.”

Crises and scandals

The poll comes as part of a series of surveys that show results from time to time. It reveals in general that the popularity of Erdogan and his ruling party, as well as his ally the opposition Nationalist Movement Party, has declined due to the deteriorating situation in the country at all levels, especially economic ones, resulting from the adoption of ineffective policies to end crises.

The developments also come as Turks grow increasingly suspicious of the government’s handling of organized crime gangs following recent revelations by Sedat Peker, the country’s mafia leader, of current and former officials, including interior ministers.

In addition to a series of recent disasters and crises in the country, fires in a number of southern states, floods and floods in northern states, which resulted in dozens of casualties and injuries, with the inability of the regime to deal with them resulting in great public anger.

“Erdogan’s popularity is eroding in the face of the most complex financial, monetary, and economic crisis Turkey is currently facing, with the collapse of the domestic lira to unprecedented historic levels over the past two years, resulting in a resounding decline in many indicators and economic sectors.”

“The opposition, as well as the Turkish street, blame the regime of Erdoğan for this deterioration, as a result of its unproductive policies.”

Turkey’s general election is scheduled for 2023, but observers expect it to be held before that date because of the country’s difficult economic and political situation.
