The Arctic is warming faster than expected

The Arctic has warmed almost four times faster than the rest of the world over the past 40 years:

the findings of a new study raise concerns about underestimating the climate models of the poles, whose warming has a predominant influence on sea-level rise.

The study, published in the Nature Group’s Communications Earth & Environment journal, significantly upgrades the rate of warming in the region around the North Pole. In 2019, the United Nations Climate Panel estimated that the Arctic was warming “more than double the global average,” reflecting a region-specific process. This phenomenon, called “Arctic amplification,” occurs when sea ice and snow, which naturally reflect the sun’s warmth, melt into seawater, absorbing more solar radiation, and heating up.
