Dead and wounded in another Al-Qaeda terrorist attack in southern Yemen

A number of soldiers from the southern joint forces were killed and wounded on Friday in a new terrorist attack carried out by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in Abyan province, southern Yemen.

A local source told Al Ain News that at least one soldier was killed and two others were injured in a terrorist attack carried out by Al Qaeda in the Al Mahfad district in the east of the coastal province overlooking the Arabian Sea.

According to the source, al-Qaeda used a remote-controlled improvised explosive device (IED) to target a military patrol carrying a number of soldiers at the entrance of al-Mahfad, a town located on the border of Shabwah province.

The attack was the second of its kind in less than a week. Seven southern forces soldiers were killed and wounded in two terrorist bombings on Sunday that targeted military patrols at the entrance of Wadi Omran, east of Modiya district in Abyan.

The attacks came days after al-Qaeda vowed to launch a war of bombings and ambushes against southern forces in Abyan in retaliation for the liberation of al-Mahfad directorate during the fourth phase of Operation Eastern Arrow. The forces, however, played down their threats and vowed to launch more strikes and destroy their hideouts.

The military operation, which began on August 22nd, achieved “significant” military breaches in six coastal and mountainous districts in Abyan, including Khanfar, Ahwar, Lawdar, al-Wadieh, Mudia, and al-Mahfad.

These incursions have cost the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda “exorbitant” bills. It has lost more than 24 terrorist elements whose identities have been confirmed, in contrast to material losses, weapons, communications equipment, and documents found in its main strongholds and camps.
