High exposure to this intestinal dye increases the production of serotonin. It is a neurotransmitter present in the intestine. The amount of serotonin modifies the composition of the gut microbiota. This increases its vulnerability to certain intestinal diseases.
In which foods is this dye found?
The red dye E129 is one of most used food colorings. It gives or restores color to a food. It adds neither taste nor odor to the products in which it is found. It is present in food products intended for children: cereals, sweetssodas and ice cream.

Canadian researchers also point to another harmful effect of this dye: the increase in “certain allergiesimmune disorders and behavioral problems in children, such as attention deficit with or without hyperactivity.
