Geneva.. High-Level Panel Discussion on Human Rights in UAE
Ahead of the 43rd Universal Periodic Review, experts discuss human rights in the UAE
A high-level panel discussion on Human Rights in the United Arab Emirates is being held on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 in Geneva, where experts and specialists from thirteen international human rights groups, a number of which hold consultative status with the United Nations (UN), will launch the Shadow Report for UAE submitted for the 43rd Session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Experts, specialists and academics in the field of human rights, information and human development, in particular the universal periodic review mechanism, representing a wide range of relevant government sectors, national human rights institutions and international non-governmental organizations will participate in the symposium, which will be held remotely through the application of ZOOM.
The session will include the role and impact of media on human rights issues, with the participation of a group of media professionals, academics, and representatives of research, thought, and opinion centers. Experts with long years of experience from many well-known international organizations will also join the panel, in addition to many international experts, to discuss various aspects related to human rights.
Dr. Cristine Mirre of Conscience and Freedom will lead the session, while Ayman Nasry, Advisor at the Arab-European Forum for Dialog and Human Rights, which organized the event, will present the importance and role of the universal periodic review mechanism and the contributions of non-governmental organizations to it, as well as the importance of the report in strengthening the state’s position during the universal periodic review of the state at the forty-third session.
The European Society for the Defense of Minorities, represented by Dr. Manel Msalmi, will highlight the UAE’s efforts and achievements in the field of economic, social, cultural and environmental rights. Several other speakers from well-known organizations from around the world also highlighted the importance of human rights and the UAE’s efforts in the region.
From Egypt, Chancellor Mahmoud Bassiouni, a member of Egypt’s National Council for Human Rights, is highlighting the use of the media to undermine human rights achievements. The session will conclude with an open debate on the importance of reports in the field of human rights and the role of the media in highlighting the efforts and achievements of countries concerned with human rights.
The panel discussion will provide a unique opportunity to shed light on the UAE’s achievements in fulfilling its human rights obligations. Participants will have an opportunity to understand the issues, challenges, and gains achieved in the UAE through thoughtful discussions conducted by experts and an analysis on key human rights indicators and what the UAE’s efforts in this area represent.
