“A Deadly Disease” Threatens Jordan
A Jordanian doctor has warned of the spread of the “West Nile Fever,” a potentially “deadly” disease, in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan after several cases and deaths were recorded in neighboring countries and regions, particularly the West Bank and Israel.
Dr. Mohammed Hassan Tarawneh, a consultant in respiratory diseases, stated that there are real concerns following the spread of the disease in Spain, Italy, and other European countries, in addition to the warnings issued by the “European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control” as it could be fatal.
He highlighted the announcement of 153 cases of West Nile Fever in the central region of Israel and the confirmation of 11 deaths, and in Palestine, the first case of the disease was recorded.

Dr. Tarawneh explained in a statement to the local press that the symptoms of the virus appear in about 4 out of 5 infected individuals and are characterized by a sudden rise in temperature, headaches, neck stiffness, rashes on the neck, arms, or legs, and in more severe cases, seizures, muscle weakness, and paralysis.
He indicated that the virus is mainly transmitted through bites from mosquitoes carrying the virus, but it can also be transmitted through contact with other infected animals or their blood or tissues.
