Floodwaters Recede in Bangladesh… Hundreds of Thousands in Shelters

River water levels in Bangladesh are receding after days of flooding, but 300,000 people remain in shelters and are in need of assistance, disaster management officials said on Sunday.

The massive floods, which have claimed at least 18 lives in Bangladesh, have added to the challenges faced by the new government that took office this month following a student-led uprising.

Disaster Management Minister Faruq Al-Azzam stated that rescue teams, including joint forces from the army, air force, and navy, are assisting those forced to flee their homes and bringing aid to those who have lost everything.

Al-Azzam told AFP that “the situation is improving as floodwaters recede,” adding that more than 307,000 people have taken refuge in shelters, and over 5.2 million people have been affected by the floods, according to the ministry.

He also said, “We are currently working to restore communications in the affected areas so we can distribute food aid.”

“We are also taking steps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases,” he added.

Residents of Bangladesh are contributing to the funding of the rescue efforts.
