A new nuclear threat has been issued by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un against Seoul and Washington.

It seems that the current global tensions, from Ukraine to Gaza to Lebanon, are not enough for Kim, who has decided to escalate another hotspot.

The North Korean leader stated that his forces would use nuclear weapons “without hesitation” if his country were attacked by South Korea and its ally, the United States, according to official media.

North Korea’s Central News Agency reported that Kim warned that “if the enemy (…) attempts to use armed forces to violate the sovereignty of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) (…) then the DPRK (the official name of North Korea) will use without hesitation all offensive power it possesses, including nuclear weapons.”
The agency noted that Kim‘s statement came during an inspection of a special forces training base west of Pyongyang.

Kim‘s threat coincided with joint naval drills conducted by the United States and South Korea in the East Sea to strengthen their mutual cooperation, the South Korean Navy said on Thursday.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that the naval forces of the two countries conducted two-day drills in the waters off Pohang, about 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul, involving four ships, including the South Korean Navy’s “Marado” ship and the American amphibious assault ship “Boxer.”

The Boxer, a Wasp-class ship, can carry about 40 aircraft, including F-35B stealth fighters. The 40,500-ton Boxer also participated in the “Sang Yong” exercises, which included both the South Korean and U.S. Navy and Marine Corps forces.

Kim Kyung-ho, the commander of South Korea’s 53rd amphibious squadron, said, “The two navies will enhance our ability to conduct joint operations, ensure interoperability, and respond firmly to any form of provocation from the enemy.”
Earlier this week, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol threatened during a military parade to “end the North Korean regime” if Pyongyang uses nuclear weapons.
Yoon stated, “If North Korea attempts to use nuclear weapons, it will face a decisive and overwhelming response from our military and the U.S.-South Korea alliance.”
Tens of thousands of U.S. military personnel are stationed in South Korea.
Seoul does not possess its own nuclear weapons, but it benefits from the protection of the U.S. nuclear umbrella.

Relations between North and South Korea have reached their lowest point in years, with Pyongyang recently announcing the deployment of 250 ballistic rocket launchers along its southern border.
