How to Use “Google Flights” Data to Get the Cheapest Flight Tickets?

The Google Flights online service, provided by Google, is an effective tool for travelers looking for the lowest possible flight ticket costs, especially during holiday seasons.

By analyzing four years of flight data, Google Flights has identified key trends that can help travelers save money on flight tickets.

A report published by Computer Network detailed how to make the most of this data.

Best Days to Travel

For travelers aiming to save money, traveling on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays is the most economical choice. According to historical data, Tuesday is the cheapest day.

Google Flights reports that traveling at the beginning or middle of the week can save 13% to 20% compared to traveling on weekends, with Sunday being the most expensive day.

Direct Flights vs. Flights with Layovers

Data indicates that flights with layovers are usually cheaper than direct flights. According to Google Flights, travelers can save up to 25% on ticket costs by choosing a flight with a layover, making it an important option for those focused on savings.

Best Days to Book

While some days, like Tuesday, might be slightly cheaper for booking, the savings are minimal. Google Flights states that tickets booked on a Tuesday are only 1.3% cheaper on average compared to the most expensive booking day, Sunday.

Therefore, the booking day is not the most significant factor in reducing costs compared to other criteria, such as booking timing or flexibility in travel dates.

Ideal Timing for Booking in Advance

Booking well in advance often secures the best prices, especially for fixed travel dates. For domestic flights, the lowest prices are typically available between 21 and 52 days before departure, with the 38th day being optimal.

For international flights, the lowest prices are usually found between 50 and 101 days before departure. However, for most destinations, prices rise significantly 50 days before the departure date.

Seasonal Booking Trends

Google Flights also provides insights on the best times to book during popular travel seasons. For holiday travel, it is best to book 36 to 72 days in advance, with 58 days being ideal.
For summer vacations, book between 13 and 43 days in advance, with 21 days being optimal. For spring vacations, book 33 to 59 days in advance, with the 44th day being the best.

Best Time to Book International Flights

The best time to book international flights varies by destination. For Europe, the cheapest tickets are usually available 50 days or more before departure, with 94 days being ideal.
For Mexico and the Caribbean, the lowest prices are found between 26 and 68 days before departure, with the 44th day being optimal.

Making the Most of the Data

Travelers can achieve significant savings by strategically planning their travel dates and booking times.
Google Flights data makes domestic and international trips more cost-effective, even during peak seasons, offering travelers economical options without compromising trip quality.
