Snowstorms Paralyze Northern Bosnia and Herzegovina
Tens of thousands of homes in Bosnia and Herzegovina were left without electricity on Monday, especially in the northern parts of the country, due to heavy snowfall accompanied by strong winds, according to the local electricity authority.
In a statement by “Elektroprivreda Bosnia and Herzegovina,” one of the three electricity service companies in the country, it was reported that “electricity is currently cut off for approximately 60,000 customers.”
Around 130,000 homes, institutions, and businesses experienced power outages for several hours in the morning, but teams dispatched to the field managed to carry out repairs, according to the same source.
The company explained that “network outages were caused by heavy snowfall accompanied by winds.”
The Una-Sana region (northwest) was the hardest hit, but thousands of homes in the Tuzla (northeast) and Zenica (central) regions were also affected.
Meanwhile, the company “Elektrokrajina,” which supplies electricity in the northern part of the country, reported significant disruptions in its distribution area.
Electricity was partially cut off in several cities, including Prijedor and its surroundings, as well as in many villages, due to the failure of around 50 power lines.
The company stated in a press release: “Our teams are working on the ground to repair the faults.”
According to the Meteorological Institute of the Republika Srpska, the storm is expected to intensify in the coming days, with snowfall reaching up to 100 centimeters in mountainous areas by Tuesday evening.
By Monday afternoon, traffic was disrupted on many roads, particularly in the north of the country and in the higher-altitude areas in the center.
