Used for centuries in Eastern traditional medicine, turmeric is valued for its health benefits, mainly due to its active compound, curcumin, which is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
However, while turmeric is widely celebrated for its health benefits, some concerns have been raised about its impact on kidney health, according to Times of India.
According to doctors, consuming turmeric in moderation is generally not harmful to the kidneys. The main risk arises from excessive intake, particularly in the form of high-dose supplements. Overconsumption of curcumin can significantly increase urinary oxalate levels, thereby raising the likelihood of kidney stone formation.
Health experts point out that turmeric contains high levels of oxalates. This means that excessive consumption, especially in supplement form, may contribute to kidney stone formation, particularly in individuals who are already predisposed to this condition.
Some medical evidence suggests that high doses of turmeric may lead to kidney failure in individuals with pre-existing kidney diseases. This is because the kidneys are forced to work harder to filter out excess chemicals, which could result in toxicity.
Furthermore, a study conducted by the Kidney Research Institute in India found that excessive curcumin intake may have toxic effects on the kidneys and worsen kidney damage, especially in individuals suffering from kidney disease or those at risk.
Additionally, turmeric supplements may interact with medications commonly used to treat kidney diseases, such as blood thinners and treatments that impair kidney function.
