The visit of Dbeibeh and Menfi to Turkey
Local media reported that Turkish intelligence has told Libya’s new Government of National Unity (GNU) that Ankara would continue to offer training and expertise in accordance with the agreements signed with its predecessor, the Government of National Accord (GNA).
However, GNA sources told Ankara that the government would no longer resort to Syrian mercenaries, and a government source said that the ones already present in Libya would be transported to Turkey.
It’s expected that the chief of the GNU Abdulhamid Dbeibeh and new chief of the Presidential Council Mohammed al-Menfi would soon make visit to Turkey to see again agreements signed between Tripoli and Ankara, and also the destiny of mercenaries allied with the GNA.
Besides, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made telephone calls to both Dbeibeh and Menfi on Saturday. He stated that the sovereignty, independence and unity of sisterly Libya were fundamental for Turkey, promising that Ankara would continue to offer all forms of required support to Libya, and affirming the necessity to boost and reinforce cooperation.
Otherwise, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio visited Tripoli on Sunday, which is the first by a European official since the formation of the GNU. He held discussions with Dbeibeh, Menfi and his counterpart Najla el-Mangoush.
Also, he highlighted Rome’s support for Libya in all fields and its efforts to unify its sovereign state institutions. While, Menfi’s office showed that Italy has begun to raise its diplomatic representation in Libya.
