Jordanian MPs Launch a Campaign Against the Muslim Brotherhood

The Jordanian Parliament’s session yesterday turned into a direct platform for expressing positions against the Muslim Brotherhood, following an announcement by security agencies about the arrest of a terrorist cell linked to the organization. This development brought the issue back to the forefront — not only as a security matter but also politically and socially.

A majority of Jordanian MPs called for banning the Muslim Brotherhood and removing members of the Islamic Action Front Party from Parliament after the intelligence service uncovered a terrorist cell affiliated with the group.

Speaker of the House Ahmed Al-Safadi said at the beginning of the session: “We must cleanse the national path of all impurities and hold accountable the terrorist cell that sought to jeopardize the security and stability of the country and endanger the safety of Jordanians.”

Al-Safadi, who chaired the session attended by many government ministers, added: “Let everyone under this dome and beyond, inside and outside the country — especially the sources of venom that feed instruments of destruction — know that Jordan will defeat delusion and cut the threads of conspiracy.”

In a speech that received wide support, MP Mohammad Al-Jarrah called for designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, confiscating their assets, and expelling their MPs from Parliament: “The Brotherhood is neither reformist nor religious — it is a suspicious subversive organization that fuels extremism.”

He added: “The Brotherhood promotes division, its members have been involved in terrorism, and it coordinates with hostile entities. Therefore, they are a greater threat than external enemies. Their party spreads chaos, does not recognize the legitimacy of the state, and must be investigated for foreign affiliations.”

MP Khamis Atiyeh, head of the Irada Party bloc (28 MPs), stated: “What the Muslim Brotherhood did is an unforgivable crime. Worse still, neither the group nor its party disavowed the act — they even defended the accused.”

He asked: “Why hasn’t the government enforced the ban issued four years ago?” He pointed out that “the group continues to issue statements and operate freely.”

Similarly, MP Mohammad Al-Khashman, head of the National Union Party bloc (17 MPs), said: “We demand that the state ban the Muslim Brotherhood, any activity connected to it, and any entity affiliated with it.”

He warned: “Failure to enforce the law allows these malignant cells to multiply.”

MP Mazen Al-Qadi, representing the Mithaq Party, stated clearly: “If the Islamic Action Front knew about the cell, the party must be dissolved by law. There’s no room for leniency or testing the patience of Jordanians.”

Ayman Abu Haneyeh, head of the Azem parliamentary bloc, stated: “Jordan is a sovereign state. We reject our land becoming a battleground for any party. We all stand behind the Hashemite leadership and oppose any foreign affiliations by domestic parties.”

MP Raed Raba’a Al-Zahrawi said: “The Brotherhood’s flashy slogans conceal foreign agendas that threaten national security.” He added: “Their silence is an unacceptable form of complicity.” He affirmed that the Taqaddom (Progress) bloc stands firmly behind His Majesty the King and fully supports the security services.

MP Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh emphasized: “Jordan is not a playground for the dreams of saboteurs.”

He added: “The Palestinian cause must not be a cover for terrorist activity — such behavior misguides the compass. When Jordan is targeted, all alignments collapse.”

He accused the Brotherhood of acting on foreign directives and reducing national debate to cheap populist rhetoric. He called for the suspension of the Brotherhood-affiliated MPs.

Following the exposure of the terrorist plot, calls intensified in Parliament to dissolve the Islamic Action Front Party — the unlicensed political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood.

It’s worth noting that Jordanian courts had already issued a ruling in the summer of 2020 dissolving the Muslim Brotherhood, with its assets transferred to the legally recognized Muslim Brotherhood Society.
