Who will save Sakhr from the clutches of the Al-Islah Party? The story of a Yemeni youth swallowed by Brotherhood prisons and returning without a voice

No sooner had “Sakhr” caught his breath in search of medication to ease his fragile psychological condition than he found himself drowning in the depths of ruthless secret prisons.

According to Al-Kholasa Net, the young man Sakhr Nabil Al-Qurashi, from the village of Al-Hadarim, went from being a patient seeking treatment to a victim reflecting the terrifying face of systematic violations carried out by the security and military apparatuses affiliated with the Al-Islah Party, the Yemeni arm of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Sakhr’s ordeal began during Ramadan of the previous year, when he was arrested by the security administration of Al-Shamaytayn, controlled by the Al-Islah Party, without any legal justification. This was only the beginning. He was later handed over to the command of the Fourth Mountain Brigade, also affiliated with the Brotherhood, and subsequently transferred to the Tour Al-Baha camp in Lahj governorate, where he was forcibly disappeared in prisons directly supervised by the Brotherhood axis commander, Aboubakr Al-Jabouli.

There, far from any oversight or rule of law, Sakhr endured episodes of extreme torture. According to human rights testimonies documented by activist Shawqi Al-Zuraiqi, the young man was severely beaten with iron prison bars, while his fragile psychological condition, which required medical care rather than restraints, was completely disregarded. This led to a dramatic deterioration of his physical and mental abilities.

In an attempt to legitimize these violations, security officials fabricated malicious charges against Al-Qurashi, alleging his involvement in manufacturing explosives and traveling to Sanaa for that purpose. However, the truth revealed by official documents was entirely different. All medical reports issued by hospitals in Sanaa and Khalifa Hospital confirmed that Sakhr’s travels were solely for psychiatric and neurological treatment, with no connection to any political or military activity.

The most tragic turning point emerged when Sakhr was recently transferred to the temporary capital, Aden, to appear before a military court. Those present were shocked to see a young man completely changed. He had entirely lost the ability to speak and was unable to defend himself due to the physical terror that had severely damaged his vocal cords and cognitive faculties. Faced with this catastrophic condition, the military judiciary was forced to immediately refer him to hospital in an effort to save whatever could still be saved.

Today, Sakhr lies in Aden’s hospitals alone, without a provider or relative to support him, amid urgent appeals to the notables of Al-Quraysha district and all people of conscience to intervene.

The story of Sakhr Al-Qurashi represents only one link in a long chain of violations affecting hundreds of detainees inside Brotherhood-affiliated prisons in the regions of Taiz and Lahj, where detention centers are turned into slaughterhouses of human dignity, and confessions are extracted under the lash of torture.
