A former dissident leader of the Muslim Brotherhood stated that the designation of the group as a terrorist organization represents a major blow to the international organization

The United States of America and Argentina have announced the designation of the Muslim Brotherhood as an international terrorist organization, in a move that reflects the escalating international stance toward the group and its affiliates, and underscores the growing global conviction regarding the threat posed by its ideology and activities to the security and stability of states.

The U.S. decision came as part of comprehensive reviews of counterterrorism policies targeting organizations with extremist ideological affiliations and transnational networks. It included tighter oversight of the Muslim Brotherhood’s funding sources, political and media activities, as well as the imposition of strict legal restrictions on entities associated with the group.

In the same context, Argentina announced the inclusion of the Muslim Brotherhood on its terrorism lists, stating that the decision is based on security reports indicating that the organization poses a threat to national security and relies on multiple front structures to operate within societies, which necessitated decisive measures to pursue its activities and cut off its sources of support.

Observers believe that the decision by the United States and Argentina to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization constitutes a serious blow to the international organization and opens the door for other countries to take similar steps, amid intensifying international efforts to combat extremist groups and safeguard international peace and security.

Ibrahim Rabie, an expert on terrorist organizations, described the announcement by the United States and Argentina as a pivotal step in the global fight against extremism, characterizing the decision as a calculated preemptive strike aimed at uprooting the organization and dismantling its external branches.

Rabie noted that the U.S. decision is part of a series of international actions reflecting a growing understanding of the nature of the Muslim Brotherhood, which does not adhere to traditional political frameworks but instead relies on building interconnected networks of groups and individuals across multiple countries, exploiting civil and humanitarian activities as a cover for its extremist ideological objectives.

He also pointed out that Argentina’s move sends a clear message to the international community that monitoring alone is no longer sufficient and that there is an urgent need for direct legal measures to classify the group as a genuine threat to national security. He stressed that the decision will help tighten pressure on the organization and strengthen oversight of its funding sources and activities.

Finally, Ibrahim Rabie predicted that other countries would follow this step in the near future, affirming that the international community has begun to fully recognize the danger posed by the Muslim Brotherhood to the security and stability of states, and that the group’s international isolation will gradually intensify as a result of these developments.
