8647: U.S. Police Investigate Number Considered a Death Threat Against Trump
The United States Park Police has launched an investigation into giant markings displaying the number “8647,” a symbol associated with opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump, which were discovered on the lawn of the National Mall.
A spokesperson for the Department of the Interior, which oversees the National Mall in downtown Washington, described the incident as “reckless vandalism,” stressing that it “will not be tolerated.”
The spokesperson added that “the Department takes any threat against the President extremely seriously, and the United States Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable.”
The Department of Justice had previously argued during Trump’s first term that the number sequence “8647” constituted a threat against the President. According to this interpretation, “86” is slang for “to kill” in certain American colloquial contexts, while “47” refers to Trump’s position as the forty-seventh President of the United States.
In a related case, former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey, a well-known political critic of Trump, was accused in April of threatening the Republican president after posting an image on Instagram showing the numbers “8647” arranged with seashells.
Decoding the Number
The slang expression “86” originated in American restaurant and bar culture during the 1930s. It was used as an internal code among staff to indicate that a menu item was sold out or that a troublesome customer should be removed and barred from returning, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary documentation of linguistic evolution.
Over time, however, the expression migrated from bar culture into mafia terminology, where it acquired a much harsher meaning, referring to the “permanent removal” or physical elimination of a person. The Oxford English Dictionary explains that the verb derived from the number can mean “to get rid of someone or something completely” or “to erase it from existence.”
Another explanation for the number’s association with death is provided by the Smithsonian Institution. According to this interpretation, traditional graves in the United States were commonly dug eight feet deep and six feet long.
Whether interpreted through mafia slang or historical burial practices, U.S. authorities treat such symbolism with utmost seriousness, particularly in light of the multiple assassination attempts that have targeted the Republican president, both during his election campaign and while serving in the White House.
