First battle in history between drones: the Sargan 3000 faces a Russian counterpart
In an encounter described as the “first-ever naval engagement” between two unmanned surface vehicles, the Ukrainian Navy said that one of its unmanned surface vessels had sunk another Russian unmanned vessel in the Black Sea.
The Ukrainian Navy explained that reconnaissance units had detected the Russian unmanned boat in an unspecified area of the Black Sea before deploying a Ukrainian unmanned surface vessel to intercept it, according to the New York Post.
According to the Ukrainian account, the vehicle approached its target and opened fire with a heavy machine gun, resulting in the destruction and sinking of the Russian vessel.
The Ukrainian Navy posted a video on Telegram that it said documented the confrontation, stating that the incident represented “the first naval battle in history between unmanned boats.”
The footage, filmed from aboard the Ukrainian unmanned vessel, shows a remotely operated vehicle firing at a small boat before it sinks. However, independent media outlets have been unable to independently verify the identity of the Russian vessel or the circumstances, timing and location of the engagement.
“Sargan 3000” and the “M2 Browning” machine gun
According to the Ukrainian Navy, the military intelligence agency took part in the operation, during which a “Sargan 3000” unmanned surface vehicle equipped with a 12.7 mm “Protector” weapon system was used.
Footage published by the “OSINT Technical” account shows the Ukrainian vehicle firing at the Russian boat with a 12.7 mm M2 Browning heavy machine gun.
The confrontation comes as unmanned surface vehicles have become an increasingly important weapon in the Russia-Ukraine war, with both sides developing multiple types for reconnaissance and attack missions.
These systems include boats loaded with explosives to target ships and coastal installations, as well as platforms that can be equipped with machine guns and missiles.
Ukraine also says it has developed vessels capable of carrying short-range drones, allowing them to approach the Russian coastline and launch the drones to conduct offensive or reconnaissance missions.
A drone war extends to the sea
The development reflects the expanding reliance on unmanned systems since Russia launched its full-scale military operation in Ukraine in 2022. After aerial drones became a central component of military operations, unmanned boats have increasingly taken on roles in targeting ships, military bases and coastal installations.
Kyiv has developed an extensive arsenal of aerial and naval drones, which it uses in defensive operations as well as attacks against targets inside Russian territory. Moscow also relies on large numbers of attack drones, including Iranian-made one-way attack drones as well as others developed domestically.
If the Ukrainian account is confirmed, the significance of the confrontation would extend beyond the sinking of an unmanned vessel. It could point to the emergence of a new form of naval warfare in which unmanned vehicles are capable of engaging one another directly, without human crews being present aboard either vessel.
