Death of the World’s Most Famous Dog, the Face of “Dogecoin”
The famous dog “Kabosu,” symbol of the cryptocurrency “Dogecoin,” has passed away at over 17 years old. On social media in Japan, she was nicknamed the “Mona Lisa of the internet.”
Kabosu’s owner, Atsuko Sato, wrote after her death on Friday: “She passed away peacefully as if she were sleeping while I was petting her.”
Sato added: “I will hold a farewell ceremony for Kabosu on Sunday at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City, from 1 PM to 4 PM.”
Kabosu rose to fame after Sato adopted her from a closing dog shelter. Three years later, her pictures began to spread widely, making her the queen of “memes.”
Kabosu was diagnosed with leukemia and liver disease in 2022. In a recent interview at her home in Sakura, east of Tokyo, Sato said that the hidden strength from the prayers of fans worldwide helped her overcome these challenges. She had become so accustomed to incredible events that when Elon Musk changed the “Twitter,” now “X,” icon to Kabosu’s face last year, she was not surprised.
