International climate action… How is the UAE enhancing its role in this regard as COP 28 approaches?
Climate change has become humanity’s biggest challenge ever, and its various and serious ramifications are predicting a bleak future for humanity unless the world acts quickly and effectively, as the United Arab Emirates is currently doing, in conserving energy and looking in various ways to build a diverse mix of energy sources, including solar and wind energy.
While the world takes 2050 as a baseline for achieving a zero-carbon goal, attempts to contain the economic fallout by expanding economic recovery programs have increased carbon emissions in 2021 alone by 1.9 gigatonnes to a total of 36.6 gigatonnes, illustrating where the world will soon be.
A Global Vision for Doubling Productive Capacity
The United Arab Emirates has confirmed a global vision to triple the production capacity of renewable energy sources over the next seven years, and to triple that of 50,000 TWh by 2040.
The COP28 Climate Summit is also in line with the UAE’s vision to gradually achieve a logical and practical transition in the energy sector, to ensure global energy security while building the future energy system, expanding partnerships and exploring opportunities to increase the capacity of renewable energy sources.
The United Arab Emirates adopts a people-centered vision for the future of climate action. As the host country of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), the UAE allocates significant resources at all levels of government and leads an innovative, transparent and inclusive climate process that includes all key stakeholders and communities.
The United Arab Emirates is preparing to host COP28 from November 6-17, 2023, since the conclusion of the COP27 conference in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, by advancing progress in efforts to combat climate change and promote international action. Expo Dubai will host various creative events and initiatives in preparation for the conference that will stimulate the communication of minds to create a more sustainable future, including highlighting youth ideas about sustainability and encouraging city visitors of all ages and cultures to participate in addressing climate change.
