Morocco enhances its military arsenal in the face of security challenges

Rabat is keen on diversifying sources of weapons and not relying solely on one market. It insists on technology transfer and its secrets in arms deals


Morocco faces internal and regional security challenges by strengthening its military strength and diversifying the sources of armaments for the Royal Armed Forces. The country took significant steps in 2023 and continues its military strategy this year to protect strategic points from all threats.

A report from the Spanish platform “Defensa” highlights the reinforcement of the Royal Armed Forces‘ defensive and offensive arsenal. The Moroccan defense budget for 2024 increased to 124 billion dirhams (12.4 billion US dollars). The report emphasizes the acquisition and maintenance of military equipment, as well as the strategy to enhance the development of the national defense industry.

Morocco acquired defensive missiles, ammunition, and sought to obtain 40 AGM-154C type JSOW guided bombs for its F-16 fighter jets, amounting to a financial transaction of 774 million dollars. This enhances Morocco’s capabilities in long-range precision strikes.

The report also mentions the acquisition of the “Pantsir” air defense system, the deadly “Bourges” system, and SpyX stealth drones with a range of 50 kilometers. Morocco aims to enter the military industries club by leveraging strong international relations.

The country emphasizes diversifying its sources of weapons, requiring technology transfer in arms purchases, and working on localization and human resource training.

In 2023, Morocco introduced Chinese Wing Loong 2 drones, becoming the third combat aircraft alongside Turkish Bayraktar drones and first-generation Wing Loong drones. Negotiations began for the acquisition of Turkish Akinci drones designed for deep attacks behind enemy lines.

Security reports indicate extremist groups gaining ground in the Sahel and desert regions, posing a primary threat to Morocco’s national security. The country faces challenges, including trans-border crime.

The Spanish report notes updates in the Moroccan army, such as the receipt of H-135M helicopters for pilot training and search and rescue missions. The Apache attack helicopters’ official manufacturing process has also begun.

Morocco planned to acquire a coastal missile defense system in 2023, receiving a grant of 10 million dollars from the United States. The country is working on improving its defense capabilities and responding to potential threats.

In November of last year, the Minister Delegate in charge of National Defense Administration announced a Moroccan investment policy in supporting military manufacturing. Morocco aims to establish advanced defense industry foundations, contributing to economic and trade development, achieving independence, and attracting foreign investments.

In 2020, Morocco established legal frameworks for defense equipment, weapons, and ammunition. The National Committee for Defense Equipment and Supplies oversees military industries, led by the Minister in charge of National Defense.
