Pilots survive… Two U.S. fighter jets collide during an air show

Two fighter jets belonging to the U.S. Navy collided mid-air while participating in an air show in the state of Idaho, in the northwestern United States.

No injuries were reported after the four pilots successfully parachuted to safety, according to American media outlets.

A statement published on the “Gunfighter Skies Air Show” website confirmed the occurrence of an “incident involving two aircraft at Mountain Home Air Force Base,” located about “two miles northwest of the base.”

It added: “Rescue teams are on site and an investigation is underway. More details will be released as they become available.”

KOMO, a local CBS News affiliate, reported that four pilots safely ejected from the two U.S. Navy “EA-18” aircraft.

A video posted on social media showed the two jets colliding mid-air before crashing to the ground and turning into a mass of flames, while the pilots’ parachutes descended calmly.

Amelia Umayam, spokesperson for the U.S. Pacific Fleet Air Forces, told KOMO that the two crashed “EA-18G Growler” aircraft are based on Whidbey Island in Washington state.

NBC News reported that the incident led to the cancellation of the air show and the closure of the base until rescue teams handle the crash site and begin the investigation.

Attempts to contact the base did not yield an immediate comment.
