Popular calls to boycott the Qatari Shura Council elections
Qatari citizens have unveiled a hashtag announcing the country’s people will boycott the Shura Council elections.
Under the slogan ” the people are boycotting the Shura elections,” the number of social media users lack transparency and corruption has penetrated the Shura Council, which is controlled by the men of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, the Emir of Qatar, and his government, without taking into consideration the people’s right to express their representatives, which they described as comic.
The hashtag is the most widely circulated among Qataris and shares photos and comments criticizing the Shura Council elections and calling for a boycott.
The most notable corruption in the electoral process the tweeps spoke of was the lack of opportunity for the people to run as the elections were dominated by former ministers and influential figures within Qatar
“Abdulla” said a Qatari tweeter: “I wish to see the programs of the candidates brothers and know if they understand in the legal legislations or not.”
The Tweeps spoke about the imbalance in determining the electoral districts of the regions, as they came out disproportionate to the nature of the regions and their population, which citizens considered a fake representation and did not represent the Qatari people.
Another Qatari citizen mocked the electoral districts list, which was endorsed by the Emir of Qatar, saying, “This is the 1952 elections, not 2021.”
Others saw the Qatari regime deliberately marginalizing some tribes and practicing a policy of exclusion towards them, with some opposing the policy of Sheik Tamim bin Hamad, the Emir of Qatar, towards the Qataris.
Khalifa Al-Ghafrani Al-Marri says: “The Al Murra tribe is marginalized, while the few who have nothing to offer are opening doors for them, but I swear by the Lord of the Slaves that your fall will be at the hands of those you are sheltering today.”
We were created to change the scales, not to climb the oppressors. When you accept this election, you only care about yourself. You are not interested in your skin or your religion.
When you elect a minister or a former deputy, they were darkness. You are satisfied with their injustice, you are responsible for the injustice like them.”
In April 2003, Qataris voted on the first constitution in Doha, which came into force on April 9, 2004. It is the first constitution of the Gulf emirate, and it was first stipulated that the Shura Council should be formed by election rather than appointment.
Despite that, the Qatari regime has not implemented the constitution for 17 years, ignoring the laws and popular demands to implement the Qatari constitution. This has raised many questions about the Qatari regime’s disregard for the laws and constitution of its country, while directing its media arm to attack Arab regimes that are promoting their violation of the constitution on every occasion.
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar, issued a law last Thursday that regulates the election of the Shura Council, in preparation for holding the first elections for the Shura Council, which observers considered an attempt to improve the image of his regime before the international community after international accusations of repeated Qatari violations of freedoms.
