Sudan: Political agreement reaches final stage

A political agreement in Sudan has reached its final stages after the names of some candidates for the presidency of the Sudanese Cabinet were revealed.

The Freedom and Change Coalition has nominated three candidates to lead the Sudanese Cabinet, naming former Minister of Justice Nasreldin Abdelbari in the Abdalla Hamdok government. Other nominees include Freedom and Change leader and head of the People’s Movement Revolutionary Movement Yasir Arman, as well as the United Democratic Union Party leader Mohamed Esmat, a leader in the Freedom and Change party.

These developments came after the chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Commander of the Armed Forces Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, announced that his forces wanted to lead the ongoing political process to an independent government.

The agreement is expected to be completed in the coming days with a “final agreement”, followed by the formation of a civilian government of independent professionals, which will lead the country for a transitional period of 24 months, to be followed by general elections.

The framework agreement signed this month charts a way out of the crisis for the country of 45 million people, strategically located between the Red Sea and the Sahel region, but does not set a deadline, and entails ambiguity on next steps.

Among the obstacles are addressing the causes that fueled tensions between the military and civilians when they shared power before the coup: reforming the security forces, bringing justice to civilians killed during protests, dismantling al-Bashir’s regime, and pushing for an end to decades of internal conflict in Darfur and elsewhere.
