The Army in Trouble Due to the Muslim Brotherhood

After the defeats suffered by the army in recent times, the leadership of the Sudanese army finds itself in a severe predicament due to its reliance on mobilized forces, militias, and Islamic groups, especially the “Muslim Brotherhood.” This has been particularly evident after the widespread promotion of new fighters to suggest popular support for the army, indicating that Sudanese people are willing to pay a high price to defend it.

Observers have stated that the army’s rhetoric about the battles has reached a stage where its credibility is doubted, and no one believes it anymore in terms of its equipment, strength, or the support it receives on the streets. The successive defeats indicate the dangers of inflating military capabilities, which have made a portion of its supporters lose confidence in the army and their bets on it, according to the London-based newspaper (Al-Arab).

Observers added that the army is in trouble because it has lost a significant portion of control. Its leadership is no longer able to mobilize and convey instructions to lower levels, which have lost numerous military rounds in various areas, collapsed, or surrendered.

Moez Hazrat, a member of the Alliance of Freedom and Change Forces, commented on the matter, saying that the army has been weakened since 1989 because the thinking of the Muslim Brotherhood group does not recognize the military institution. The late leader of this project, Hassan al-Turabi, did not acknowledge the role of armies and adopted a vision based on mobilizing the people. Since then, the army leadership has relied on regional and ideological militias, which lack the fighting spirit to defend the nation, and that is why the people are now paying the real price.

Hazrat added in a press statement that the mobilized forces belonging to the Islamist current are leading the war. Most army leaders are not actively engaged in the fighting. A large number of officers have been arrested by the Rapid Support Forces or fled the country after realizing that this war is futile, as al-Burhan himself acknowledged at the beginning of the war.

He explained that the Islamic movement that infiltrated the ranks of the army refuses to ceasefire and return to the negotiation table, and al-Burhan and his companions follow many of its leaders since their heavy return to the army after the October 2021 coup. Continuing this situation leads other garrisons to hand over their equipment and distance themselves from the war.

The Rapid Support Forces have announced in the past two days their control over many areas and army positions.

It is worth noting that al-Burhan‘s repeated talk about winning the war no longer convinces a large segment of Sudanese people. His rhetoric has lost its impact, necessitating a reassessment of the army’s vision, especially with the growing skepticism about the orientations and loyalties of the elements fighting within it.
