The role of “sisters” in support of terrorism within the Muslim Brotherhood organization

The trial of Aïcha al-Chater, the daughter of Brotherhood leader and Deputy Supreme Guide Khairat al-Chater, has reignited a debate about the role played by the Sisters Department in the manufacture and support of terrorism in Egypt in the wake of the June 30th revolution.

According to investigations conducted by Egypt’s Supreme State Security Prosecution, Khairat al-Chater’s daughter, along with a number of other sisters, took up the task of supporting the terrorist organization by facilitating the transfer of funds and instructions from Brotherhood leaders abroad to armed groups and members of the organization at home.

Aïcha al-Chater assumed the responsibility of leading the Sisters Division for a period of time during the June Revolution, and planned operations related to the promotion of rumors aimed at stabilizing the country, related to freedoms and allegations of enforced disappearance.

Sources familiar with the proceedings said that Aisha Mohammed Khairat Saad al-Chater, 37, has been involved in Brotherhood campaigns over the past years, specifically since President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi assumed the presidency of Egypt, alleging cases of “enforced disappearance” of activists affiliated with the political Islamist movement, despite the Egyptian authorities’ denial of this on more than one occasion with official statements.

The Brotherhood’s campaigns against the state were organized in cooperation between the organization’s members inside Egypt and abroad, including members of the so-called “Egyptian Brotherhood Association outside the Country”. These campaigns were led by the fugitive Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Abdelwahab Abd Al-Fatah Hammouda from 2014 to 13 April 2021.

The terrorist organization established what is known as the “Egyptian Coordination for Rights and Freedoms”, with the purpose of distorting the State’s security and judicial institutions, and alleging that the authorities unlawfully detained persons and subjected them to torture and murder without substantiating these allegations.

According to the charges, the defendants are accused of providing financial and moral support to the terrorist group and its affiliated terrorists, as well as possessing publications and recordings promoting the organization and purposes of the Brotherhood and using social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to incite violence against state institutions.

Egyptian security expert Maj. Gen. Mahmoud Mansour said: “The terrorist Muslim Brotherhood, which is banned by law in Egypt, was known for forming a number of committees and affiliated cells to achieve its goals indirectly”.

Investigations conducted by the security services and the judiciary proved that a number of members of the Brotherhood’s leadership and mid-level cadres in the terrorist group were exploiting these activities inside and outside Egypt.

Mansour said that the enforced disappearances campaigns that arise from time to time are nothing but false Brotherhood allegations aimed at inciting local and international public opinion against the Egyptian state, but the current case reveals the truth that the Brotherhood is behind the organized psychological campaigns targeting Egypt.

According to the sources familiar with the investigations with 31 Brotherhood members, including Khairat al-Chater’s daughter, the purpose of the campaigns to claim the existence of enforced disappearance in Egypt was “incitement against state institutions” and the implementation of the directives of the Brotherhood organization led by Mahmoud Hussein.

The Emergency State Security Criminal Court in Egypt, headed by Chancellor Mohamed El Sherbini, decided on Sunday to postpone the trial of a number of Brotherhood leaders, including the daughter of Khairat al-Chater, deputy leader of the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist group, until February 14th.

The case involves 31 Brotherhood members facing charges of joining a banned group and receiving funding from abroad.
