The UAE offers three million dollars to support the reconstruction of the Palestinian town of Huwara

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday announced three million dollars to support the reconstruction of the Palestinian town of Huwara, following recent acts of destruction and sabotage by Israeli settlers.

Huwara, located in the north of the occupied West Bank, was attacked by settlers who, according to its municipal councilor Wajih Odeh, destroyed and burned “more than 30 houses and 100 vehicles”.

The attack by the settlers, who came from different areas, followed an armed attack that killed two brothers, aged 20 and 22, as they were driving their vehicle near the Huwara junction on the road between Ramallah and Nablus.

Statements made by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich after the attack on Huwara drew wide condemnation in the region and the world. He called on the Israeli state to “obliterate” the Palestinian town, before admitting that he had chosen his words “in a bad way.”

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan “directed $3 million to support the reconstruction of the Palestinian town of Huwara and those affected by recent events”, the official WAM news agency reported.

The initiative will be implemented by the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi in co-operation with the UAE-Palestinian Friendship Club, the news agency said.

In 2020, the UAE signed agreements to normalize relations with Israel, followed by Bahrain and Morocco. The UAE and Israel have strengthened their military partnership since the agreements were signed.

“The UAE’s support for the Palestinian people is firm and is confirmed by real positions and concrete actions that alleviate the suffering of the Palestinians,” presidential diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash wrote on Twitter, commenting on the decision to contribute to the reconstruction of Huwara.
