World Food Programme: $14 million worth of food products stolen in Sudan

“The conflict in Sudan has forced some 100,000 people to flee to neighboring countries, according to the UN.”
It has also hampered the delivery of aid in a country where about a third of the population is already reliant on humanitarian aid.

Looting of humanitarian aid

Reuters says: The World Food Program (WFP) has estimated that $13 to $14 million worth of food products for people in need in Sudan have been looted since fighting broke out last month.

“WFP country director for Sudan Edi Rowe described looting in the country as rampant and some reports of UN Food Program (WFP) supplies being stolen were still being investigated.”

“We estimated that nearly 17,000 metric tons – some in our warehouses and others on wheels – were looted,” Rowe said. “This translates into about $13 or $14 million – just the cost of food, and almost every day we receive reports of further looting.”

Roh’s comments come a day after UN aid coordinator Martin Griffiths appealed to Sudan’s warring parties to ensure safe passage for humanitarian aid and staff.

“The conflict in Sudan has forced some 100,000 people to flee to neighboring countries, according to the UN, and has hampered aid delivery in a country where about a third of the population is already reliant on humanitarian aid.”

Ru said the WFP urgently needs to buy more supplies for Sudan. “We know that if we don’t buy now, we will run out of supplies in the next two to three months,” he said.
“We have already started our engagement with donors to see how fast we can also procure and deliver at these sites,” he said.
