The suffering of Libyan society from the presence and control of militias over decision-making in western Libya – Details
Libyan society suffers from the presence and control of militias over decision-making in western Libya; These armed groups spread after 2011.
Criminal activity
The criminal activities of armed militias in western Libya 10 years ago began to take control of official institutions, and reached a transformation of mafia tactics at their worst.
A report issued by the Italian Institute for International Political Studies revealed that groups have begun taking control of financial centers in the capital, Tripoli, such as banks, and have turned into a kind of “cartel” that imposes “protection royalties” on companies and entities and operates on the black market.
Use of violence
Dr. Mohamed Zubaidi, a Libyan political analyst, said
In western Libya, it has become a “system where violence coexists, where armed groups have grown in strength, by dominating state assets or business.”
The Libyan political analyst added that ending this situation requires “social and economic reforms for the reasons that led to the proliferation of militias,” noting that the solution “can only be achieved through the use of force, in order to achieve the state’s monopoly of weapons.”
He continued: While the international movement to pressure Libyan leaders to hold elections this year is accelerating, the leaders of armed militias in the western region of Libya announced the activation of the so-called “Union of Libyan Revolutionaries”, to continue the state of chaos and terrorism.
