Turkey: 5.6 magnitude earthquake shakes Tokat region
A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Tokat region in northern Turkey on Thursday, according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
The earthquake hit the Solo Saray area in Tokat province, felt by residents of the cities of Kayseri, Sivas, Samsun, Amasya, and Gümüşhane.
The earthquake damaged the minarets of two mosques, but the mayor of Tokat stated that there was nothing serious in the city center at the moment and that there was no problem with the buildings.
The Minister of Interior said that all teams from relevant agencies have been dispatched to the site to conduct field survey operations.
Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu stated on the Ex platform that teams from AFAD and other relevant agencies are investigating the situation at the earthquake site, according to Reuters.
On February 15th, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Akçadağ district in Malatya province, central Turkey.
On February 6, 2023, earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria, one of the largest natural disasters in the region recently, according to the World Health Organization, one year after those devastating earthquakes.
Those earthquakes affected 11 provinces in Turkey, with its center being Kahramanmaraş province, as well as a part of Syria, resulting in 50,000 deaths in Turkey and 5,900 in Syria.
