Alert and port closures: An early winter storm sweeps through Syria
A powerful storm struck Damascus and most Syrian regions, uprooting trees and causing several solar panels to fall onto parked cars in the streets. It also led to the collapse of an old wall, slightly injuring two children.
The Syrian Ministry of Transport announced the closure of commercial ports in Latakia, Tartous, Arwad Island, and Baniyas. Warnings were issued to exercise caution against strong winds, expected snowfall, and rain caused by the influence of a surface low-pressure system tied to the extension of the Siberian anticyclone, which is expected to bring a wave of dry cold across the country in the coming days.
According to the Meteorological Directorate, the extension of the Siberian anticyclone at the beginning of the winter season is a rare occurrence. It also noted that persistent snowfall had already begun in the mountainous heights of Mount Hermon, and temperatures across the country had dropped by an average of 10 degrees.
The strong winds, expected to peak in the coming hours, have prompted car owners to seek safe parking spots, away from buildings and trees, due to increased risks.
Residents rushed to inspect their balconies and rooftops, removing any items that might be affected by the intensifying winds.
In recent years, the Mediterranean basin has experienced several storms accompanying the arrival of winter. Weather experts have linked this phenomenon to global climate changes caused by global warming, pollution, and the shrinking of vegetation cover due to unprecedented levels of wildfires.
