Old Video Resurfacing Exposes the Falsehood of Hasm’s Threats

The Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism has confirmed that a newly circulated video by the group Hasm, which is affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, is nothing more than a re-edited version of old footage from 2017, not a new threat as the group attempted to claim.

Amid rising regional tensions caused by the ongoing war in Gaza and the growing number of extremist calls exploiting the security chaos, the terrorist group Hasm reappeared with a propaganda video threatening Egypt, in a blatant effort to prove its existence and create panic. However, the threat was quickly debunked.

In an official statement, the Observatory described the release as a “media deception”, noting that the video—titled “Qadimoun” (We Are Coming) and published Friday night on Hasm-affiliated channels—was not new, but rather a re-edit of a previous production titled “Qatilouhum” (Fight Them), broadcast nearly eight years ago.

The video contained scenes of military training, live fire drills, and use of light and medium weapons, ending with a threat directed at Egyptian security forces. It stirred widespread concern until it became clear that it did not reflect any real operational capability or active presence, but was simply a desperate attempt to regain visibility after the group failed to recruit new members or conduct meaningful operations in recent years.

The Observatory’s analysis clearly showed that the visuals matched the old footage, with only minor editing changes and new captions, but no new field content. Experts say this demonstrates the severe decline of Hasm, both in terms of media influence and logistical capacity, as its reliance on recycled propaganda signals an inability to produce anything current or impactful.

The report described the release as a “bland media showcase”, aimed solely at bringing Hasm back into the headlines, despite its waning relevance and impotence in threatening national security. The video’s threats were dismissed as vindictive efforts to disrupt Egypt’s stability, particularly in light of the country’s growing regional and international stature and its economic reform progress.

The timing of the video was not coincidental, the statement added, but aligned with recent calls by ISIS, urging its followers to exploit ongoing chaos in the Middle East—chiefly the war in Gaza—to carry out attacks. Hasm, long ideologically and organizationally tied to the Muslim Brotherhood, appears to have seized on this opportunity in an attempt to revive itself as a local ISIS proxy in Egypt.

However, such attempts have been met with ridicule and rejection, particularly from security and media circles, once the falsification was exposed. This reinforces the perception that Hasm is in a state of disintegration and isolation, after years of security crackdowns that decimated its structure, funding channels, and leadership.

In its statement, the Observatory reaffirmed its “full confidence” in Egypt’s security services, praising their high level of preparedness to face any threats, whether from Hasm or other extremist organizations like ISIS. It highlighted how Egypt has, in recent years, successfully uprooted terrorism, becoming a regional model of stability despite surrounding turmoil.

Amid concerns that extremist groups might exploit the regional turmoil to justify terror plots, Egyptian authorities have raised their alert level, particularly in border areas, while intensifying domestic surveillance and pursuit of suspicious individuals.

The Observatory further emphasized the importance of shielding Egyptian society—especially youth—from the ideological deception of such groups, stressing that the fight is as much intellectual as it is security-based. It stated: “The awareness of the nation’s youth is the true shield against such plots, and we are committed to providing deep analysis of the hidden motives behind any extremist media or propaganda activity.”

It also warned that such videos can sometimes attract sympathizers or misguided teenagers, and called for a concerted effort from religious, educational, and media institutions to confront digital radicalization.

The statement concluded with a clear message: “We trust in Egypt’s state and institutions to foil any terrorist scheme, regardless of its methods. And we affirm that the only real solution to preventing extremist exploitation of the Palestinian cause is to achieve a fair and comprehensive resolution that ends the suffering of the Palestinian people and blocks those who seek to exploit the cause for terrorist agendas.”
