Funding of Extremist Associations Shakes Belgium: Is the Country Moving Toward Banning Muslim Brotherhood Branches?

Belgian lawmakers have called for a parliamentary investigation into public funding granted to associations linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, following an intelligence warning that one such group was involved in spreading extremist ideas. This call comes amid a broader European effort to dismantle the infrastructure of political Islam.

Belgium’s political scene was stirred after the State Security Service exposed ties between the association “Coalition for Inclusion and the Fight Against Islamophobia” and the Muslim Brotherhood, labeling it the group’s main propaganda arm in the country. The association is allegedly used as a front to normalize extremist ideologies and facilitate their infiltration into public discourse.

Liberal MP Denis Ducarme demanded the urgent formation of a parliamentary committee to investigate the public funding of this organization. In a press statement, he said that authorities continued to fund an entity clearly identified by security services as a local front for the Brotherhood, highlighting political complicity carried out under the banner of “blind tolerance,” despite the availability of intelligence reports.

Former MP Georges Dallemagne also harshly criticized the green party “Ecolo,” accusing it of providing ideological cover for the association. Dallemagne called for its ban, revealing he had received direct threats due to his opposition to radical groups, which forced him to place his children under police protection.

In response, the association issued a brief statement denying any affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood, asserting that opposing Islamophobia does not constitute extremism. However, media leaks from the State Security report confirmed that the group uses minority rights discourse as a façade to infiltrate democratic institutions and subtly promote Brotherhood ideology.

The developments in Belgium align with similar movements across Europe: Germany is pursuing Brotherhood-linked groups for terrorism financing, while France continues a wide-scale crackdown on political Islam entities under its “Republican Recovery” plan. Austria has enacted strict laws to curb extremist organizations.

Observers believe that the formation of an inquiry committee in Belgium may mark the beginning of a new phase in confronting the spread of political Islam—especially when it comes to public funds granted to associations connected to groups under security surveillance.
