After FIFA settled the issue of Iran’s participation in the World Cup… Trump comments

U.S. President Donald Trump commented on statements made by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in which he settled the issue of Iran’s participation in the World Cup finals in the United States.

Trump stated that he “had no objection” to Iran playing its World Cup matches in the United States despite the war between the two countries.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office when asked about the FIFA president’s remarks, the U.S. president said: “If Gianni (Infantino) says that, I have no objection.” He added: “I think we should let them play.”

These remarks came after Infantino, who maintains close relations with Trump, reaffirmed that Iran will play its matches on U.S. soil during the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Doubts had arisen regarding the possibility that the Iranian national team might not participate in the World Cup following its war with the United States. An envoy of President Donald Trump had also called for Iran’s exclusion and for Italy to take its place.

Swiss national Gianni Infantino, FIFA President, confirmed that Iran will play its World Cup matches in the United States during the opening of the FIFA Congress (Thursday), in the absence of the Iranian delegation, highlighting the tensions and challenges surrounding the tournament.

Infantino stated: “First of all, of course Iran will participate in the 2026 World Cup, and of course Iran will play in the United States.”

He added: “The reason is very simple: we must unite… This is my responsibility, our responsibility.”

Officials from the Iranian football federation, including its president Mehdi Taj, were scheduled to attend the meeting, but they turned back from Toronto airport due to what Tehran described as “unacceptable behavior” by Canadian immigration authorities, despite traveling with valid visas.

Reuters reported that two members of the delegation could have attended the FIFA Congress but chose not to participate after one member of the delegation was denied entry into Canada.
