Libya’s Muslim Brotherhood continues trying to postpone elections

Leaders of Libya’s Muslim Brotherhood continue their attempts to postpone elections that have been decided locally and internationally.

Khaled al-Michri, the President of the State Council and a senior advisor to the Justice and Construction Party, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, suggested postponing the December 24 elections for three months in order to achieve consensus on its laws.

Al-Michri, during his participation in a press conference held in Istanbul, indicated that the State Consultative Council will not participate in the elections or obstruct them. He confirmed that he filed an appeal with the judiciary to rule on the decisions of the Elections Commission, expressing at the same time his opinion on the alleged difficulty of appealing to the Supreme Court to challenge the election laws issued by the Council of Representatives, in light of the freezing of its constitutional constituency.

Al-Michri pointed out that the administrative judiciary has the authority to review appeals related to the decisions of the Elections Commission, stressing that the State Advisory Council did not resort to force to prevent the organization of elections, calling for a boycott; The zero voter turnout in a number of constituencies makes it legally invalid.

Al-Michri accused the President of the Elections Commission, Imad Al-Sayeh, of adopting the electoral laws issued by the Council of Representatives, despite the objection of the State Advisory Council for personal reasons, because Al-Sayeh believes that the consultant intends to dismiss him.

Al-Michri described the electoral laws issued by the Council of Representatives as having been passed without any vote in the first place, and they were detailed for Khalifa Haftar to become president, in violation of the Constitutional Declaration, six UN Security Council resolutions, the political agreement, and the Berlin Outputs.

Al-Michri stressed the desire of the State Advisory Council to hold elections on the basis of sound laws, accusing Egypt and France of trying to portray it as an obstacle to the elections. He added that the French position at the Paris Conference, which calls for holding elections on the basis of flawed laws, is supported only by Egyptians.

The position of the United States and other States consulted by the Consultative Council of State was as follows: “If we can hold elections with these laws, it’s good, and if it needs to be amended, it’s fine”, he said, adding that Turkey and Italy were not in favor of the procedure under flawed laws.

The buyer continued: Ankara and Rome believe that holding elections in this manner will lead to war and partition of the country, expecting the Prime Minister of National Unity to win a majority of votes, if the elections are held in a fair atmosphere, with the exclusion of Hiftar’s victory by more than 10 percent of the votes, according to his claim.

Regarding Paris’s call for the departure of foreign troops from Libya, al-Michri pointed the finger at France for helping Haftar with weapons and technology, and now equates Turkish forces that came “legally” with “mercenaries” and “criminals” who helped the latter in its “aggression” against Tripoli.

The counselor said: The French oil and gas company Total is the biggest victim of the restoration of rights to Turkey and Libya in the Eastern Mediterranean basin, he concluded: “Libya and Turkey are intrigued by this French “conspiracy”, and it will not succeed, and we will strengthen our relations with Ankara“.
