ChatGPT Back Online After Brief Outage

The Microsoft-backed company OpenAI announced that its popular chatbot, ChatGPT, is back online after an outage that affected thousands of users.

In a statement on its website, the company said, “The issues affecting ChatGPT have now been resolved.”

It added that the service was restored for most users by 4:34 p.m. Eastern Time (00:34 GMT) on Saturday, though a small number of customers experienced issues with the program until 5:00 p.m. (01:00 GMT) the same day.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on the platform X that ChatGPT had been down for 30 minutes.

Altman stated, “We’ve gotten much better on reliability, but clearly there’s more work ahead.”

According to Down Detector, a website that monitors internet and software outages, more than 19,403 users were affected by the outage, which lasted about half an hour starting at 7:13 p.m. Eastern Time (00:13 GMT) on Saturday.

Prior to that, OpenAI had reported that it was experiencing an outage that rendered its popular chatbot, ChatGPT, unavailable.

The company said in an update on its website that it was investigating the issue and working to restore service as soon as possible, according to Reuters.

OpenAI did not disclose the cause of the issue, stating only that it had identified the source and was working to fix it.

Since ChatGPT‘s launch in November 2022, it has attracted 250 million weekly active users. OpenAI‘s valuation rose from $14 billion in 2021 to $157 billion, while its revenue grew from zero to $3.6 billion, far exceeding Altman’s original expectations.
